protect them all a challenge that no one has ever succeeded at before. The
Giver is based on Lois Lowry's beloved young adult novel of the same name,
which was the winner of the 1994 Newbery Medal.
REVIEW: Wow
where to begin on this one. First off I loved it!!! Really can't stress that enough. I’ve watched it twice now
already in fact since I first gave it a try this week. The Giver is based on the multi-award winning novel of the
same name by Lois Lowry that was first published in 1993. (I have never read it
before but I definitely will be doing so after seeing the movie.)
It’s the story of a society that at first
appears to be a sort of Utopia where all people get along and live in harmony and peace after what is referred to as the Ruin. Everyone embraces the doctrine
of sameness from the way that they speak, to what they wear, and eat, and no one
sees color (literally and figuratively). There is no war, starvation, hate, no
divisiveness, no death and it all seems hunky dory at first glance. However
when the surface is scratched this perfect little world is shown for the
nightmare it really is.
The surface gets rippled first when Jonas a teenage boy
embarks on his journey to manhood at his “graduation” where he and all teens of around 17-18 are
assigned their careers that are chosen for them by the elders (who have watched them all their lives). Several other
ceremonies marking other milestones within the community take place at the same time
of graduation … (these are the ones shown in the movie I understand there were
more in the book) - The babies who have reached age one are assigned to their
family units. Children who have reached the age of nine are given a bicycle to
mark their growing independence and elevated status within the community,
and the elderly are released to move to “Elsewhere” (what is assumed to be a beautiful and restful place for them to live the rest of their lives). When Jonas receives his
chosen profession it is vastly different than all the other graduates as he has
been selected to become a Keeper of Memory. It is a very important job and
title given only to a very select few who encompass 4 vital attributes – courage, integrity,
intelligence, and “a capacity to see beyond”.
Jonas’s mentor who is to teach him everything he needs to
know as "The Receiver of Memory" is called “The Giver” who is played brilliantly by Jeff
Bridges. Jonas learns that he is to be very different than everyone else in the
community. He will live by a different set of rules than everyone else must strictly adhere to. He is allowed to ask any questions, he is allowed to lie where no one else is, but he must also never discuss what he sees in his training to others. He will literally be “receiving” all the memories from the past so as
to be able to guide and advise others in the present he is told by The Giver.
However Jonas learns very quickly in his training that there is so much that the community no longer has that they did in the past including…different climates (there is no snow or bad weather anymore due to
climate control), there are no animals, people do not have feelings and emotions, (these are all being
suppressed by daily injections that they are all told is to keep them healthy
and that they must take), there is no music, and he learns for the first time about color and the lack of it in their world.
Through the images and knowledge that Jonas receives from the Giver he begins to realize that so
much is missing from the world they have created within the community… things like fun,
individuality, religion, different races and cultures, freedom, and most importantly real truth, affection, and love.
I won’t ruin the movie or the book for you by saying much more on what happens from there but I will say
that what Jonas learns is that he is far from living in a perfect world. He is
living in a world devoid of the most precious things of a person’s existence –
freedom, truth, and love. Jonas then is set on a path to reveal the truth of what
all is being stolen from every person as well as to save the lives of
thousands!
I personally think that everyone should see this wonderful film and read the
book as well... as they teach some extremely timely lessons that are much needed in
our own country today! Two of it’s greatest lessons that it shows unequivocally
is that of the importance of Freedom and Love and that Life is precious and
should be valued at every stage of life. It tackles the very weighty evils of
abortion and euthanasia with strong visuals and dialogue and doesn't flinch from the repercussions. It also shows just
how dangerous it can be when people allow themselves to become complacent and subservient and
allow their freedoms to be taken away both willingly and unwillingly as well, even when done in the name of “peace” and supposed “good of all”.
This film is a GIVER of it’s own by making you think about it’s
very timely message and the situations that it depicts...and it is one that
will leave you feeling triumphant at the end.
I was truly shocked that such a pro-freedom and pro-life
movie would come out of Hollywood. Many progressive and liberal people were
attached to this one and they readily drink from the fountain of big government, less freedom, and most especially they usually loath anything even close to
a prolife message. So I was doubly shocked that Meryl Streep (whom I personally
can’t stand and was the main reason that I waited so long to see the film)
would be in such a movie! Especially since she has always been so outspokenly
pro-choice. It made perfect sense to me that she was cast as the villain in this one – and
she fit it perfectly might I add - I think because what she was playing seems to be very
close to her own personal belief system.
The only real problem I had majorly with the movie was the end did seem a bit rushed. I wish that they would have elaborated more at the end on several relationships and other things but that does not detract overall from the films very powerful messages. I was more than happy to have my teenage son watch this one with me and we discussed it in length afterwards and yes he liked it as well!
I could go on and on but the main thing is please DO see this
wonderful film. I loved it and I believe you will too! It’s one about extremely important issues that every American
(and the world over for that matter) from pre-teens to adults should be questioning and thinking about especially in view of the way our country is - and is - heading these days!
No strong language, nudity, or sex. Some violence is depicted in hunting and war imagery but it is not explicit. Much worse is seen daily and nightly on regular TV. The only real reason this one is rated PG-13 is because many of the issues it deals with would go over many under the age of 11 or 12's heads. It is a remarkably clean yet hard hitting movie.

All right everyone that knows anything about me knows how I feel about abortion. I hate it completely.
I just want to say one thing in light of all the people throwing hissy fits over companies like Hobby Lobby not wanting to cover abortion causing drugs. If a person believes that abortion is wrong the very LEAST that a person could do would be to respect that belief. And if they own a company and are paying for health insurance they should not be made to pay for abortions or any drug that causes one period!
We supposedly live in the land of the free, but that's only true in many people's minds for as long as you agree with them. If they want something and you won't give it to them - (even if it goes against everything you believe at your very core) then too bad. You are just evil incarnate and should be made to give them what they want anyway...regardless of your rights and your beliefs.
At the VERY least if you are just are bound and determined and nothing is going to stop you from getting an abortion (and God forbid that you do) pay for it yourself! Don't make someone else have to pay for your choice!
I am sick and tired of hearing people whine about Hobby Lobby when they DO offer 16 out of the 20 different forms of birth control!!! People are loosing their minds over them not wanting to pay for the 4 abortion causing drugs! They have rights too!!! So get over yourselves! If you want to kill your child at the very, very least have the common decency and do not ask or expect someone else to pay the bill for it!

H.R. 1797 — The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act pending in Congress, as amended on June 14, 2013, now has a rape and incest exception — as if children conceived in rape are such freaking mutants that we are incapable of feeling pain. Well, I’m feeling the pain right now — especially when you’ve thrown us under the bus! This is a callous attack on children conceived in rape — a wanton and reckless disregard for our lives. The first section of the bill goes into great detail how unborn children experience pain, and why, beginning at 20 weeks gestation, unborn children should be protected — and then it excludes the weakest, most vulnerable, easy targets, the most marginalized and discriminated segment of our population — “the least of these.” And much of the pro-life leadership are still pushing the bill, which is the real problem, because the exceptions wouldn’t be in the bill if the Representatives didn’t know that they could count on the support of major pro-life organizations.
Once again, the debates on Facebook and Twitter echo the same sentiment of the majority voices in the pro-life movement for the last 40 years — you “save the 99 in exchange for the 1.” Of course, whenever I hear that phrase I can’t help but think of the Parable of the Lost Sheep in which Jesus was talking about the little children and “the least of these.” He was all about saving the 1! But the slogan goes — “save as many as you can while working to save all.” Really? Tell me what you’re doing to work to save all, because I don’t see it. There is no strategy within the greater pro-life movement to go back to save the 1. And the fact is, if we are going to be saved, we need to be part of a package deal because it doesn’t seem like very many would follow Jesus’ example of going off just to save the 1. After all, the Hyde Amendment exceptions have been in place for 20 years now, and I’ve never heard discussions of any strategy to go back to remove those exceptions. I would love to see an example where there was a law with a rape exception and someone went back to save the 1 and the rape exception was removed from the law.
The other argument is that the votes simply aren’t there. Well, tell me what efforts you’ve been making in order to see that the votes are there in the future to be able to save all. Have you identified who the rape exception legislators are? Are you bringing in speakers like me who were conceived in rape who could possibly change their hearts and minds, like my experience with Gov. Rick Perry and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich? Are you planning a campaign to target them in their primaries so that we can elect no-exceptions legislators? Do you have a policy for your PAC endorsements that candidates who make the rape exception can’t get your endorsement — at least in the primaries? What is your strategy to save all? If you don’t have one, then your words are surely meaningless. As the saying goes, your actions speak so loudly, I can’t hear what you’re saying. It’s mere lip-service. But the donors have no idea. . . . If the party platform of the Republican party is no-exceptions, then surely the grass-roots supporters of the pro-life movement are no exceptions as well, but the donors likely assume those values are upheld by the organizations they financially support.
In Footnote 54 of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v Wade, as part of the personhood discussion, the Court pointed out the fact that Texas had exceptions, and that this undermined the State’s whole argument for personhood. The Court recognized that when you make exceptions, you demonstrate that you don’t really believe that’s a person — that ANY are persons, and when ALL aren’t protected, NONE are protected. If we are ever going to see Roe v Wade overturned, we need to stop compromising. The Hyde Amendment has had a chilling effect on states that want to pass Personhood statutes or abortion bans, because their budget office gets the bills killed on the floor because under Hyde, they MUST fund abortions in cases of rape, incest and the life of the mother.
I’ve learned that advocates for compromise don’t like having the label of “compromiser” associated with them in any way. It’s been suggested that I’m name-calling or questioning their pro-life values and intentions. It’s not my intent to do so. I know that they are good-willed pro-life people who need to see the fallacies in their strategy and the undermining of their principles. It’s not right that legislators can count on the greater pro-life movement’s support every time a rape exception is added. When you set the bar low, they will meet it. For once, I’d like to see the majority voice tell them “No, that’s not acceptable!” How can you demonstrate that you’ve fought for children conceived in rape? And I mean really fought battles for – where you staked your claim and stood up to legislators and candidates?
Right to Life of Michigan has actually fought for children conceived in rape — consistently. Because of their uncompromising principles, there has never been a rape exception in the history of Michigan law. When they didn’t have the votes to pass the state version of the Hyde Amendment without a rape exception, they worked on the legislators to get them to change. And when they still didn’t have the votes, they targeted them in the primaries, got several voted out, and the very next legislative session, they got it passed with no exceptions — that’s how you get it done! Sadly, for many years, RLM was the only affiliate of NRLC who had this no compromise policy. But they’ve now mentored many others like Georgia RTL, Tennessee RTL, South Dakota RTL and Alaska RTL who’ve now gone to the no exceptions/no compromise model. American Life League has this same policy, as well as Personhood USA. Does the pro-life organization you support have this policy? Ask them! Challenge them.
Please don’t accuse anyone of not really being pro-life — that’s not at all helpful. We actually want them to change their policy. It’s possible — look at Gov. Rick Perry and look at Georgia Right to Life. Nearly 13 years ago, GRTL was ranked 50th by AUL as being the worst state for pro-life legislation. After having changed their policy, they are now ranked 2nd and have a Gold Star rating with AUL. They got the mediocre exceptions legislators out and got passionately pro-life legislators in. And they helped to change many from being mediocre to being passionate about their pro-life values. It’s all about leadership.
I’ve said this before — we are not cannon fodder! How dare anyone assume that they can put us out on the front lines and then take a giant step back. You don’t discriminate. Can you imagine if there were a rape exception in case of bi-racial rape? The arguments would be the same — “you save the 999 in exchange for the 1,” and “it’s just that the baby would look more like the rapist and be more of a constant reminder of the rape” — arguments which I’ve heard before! Can you imagine the national outcry from civil rights leaders? ”How dare you discriminate!” And yet, so many think nothing of discriminating against children conceived in rape.
Some have said to me, “It’s nothing against you personally.” But it affects me personally. After all, I am aperson, right? I’m alive today because of no exceptions/no compromise pro-life leaders who recognized that mine was a life worth saving, and they ensured that I was legally protected. I feel like my life was rescued from a burning building. How could I not return to that building to save the others? How could I not advocate that they should be rescued as well?
Just remember — the U.S. Supreme Court said rapists don’t deserve the death penalty — that it’s cruel and unusual punishment for even child molesters. So why should an innocent child deserve the death penalty for the crimes of her father? Is that so hard to say? Defend us.

Please educate yourself and help stop this evil that is slowly killing our country like a cancer. Make no mistake God will not be mocked we can't look the other way and think he won't care. We will answer for our actions and our INACTIONS in this life. He does not hold people unaccountable when they know evil is happening and they do absolutely nothing to stop it. It's time to learn and show the truth to others about abortion. It's time to stop the killing of our innocent brothers in sisters in the womb, and the hurting and suffering of our sisters their mothers. Don't believe the cleverly spun lies women who have abortions suffer emotionally and physically for the rest of their lives.
If a person will not defend the most defenseless and innocent among us what does that say about them? Honestly answer that question. Think of it as if it were your life on the line or that of the person you loved most in the world what would your answer be?

Yes abortion is hard to hear about, it's not a pleasant topic, but if we don't stop avoiding the hard things and do the right thing people we are lost. It's time to grow up and start fighting for and doing the right thing again. Stop avoiding hard topics and actually start doing something about them! You would want someone to speak out and help you if you were the one in danger! Remember that thing Jesus said about loving your neighbor... yes he did mean the ones still in the womb and the little babies just born too!
And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

So for those that support a woman's right to CHOOSE please take a moment and really look at and study that "choice" you support. See it for what it really is, and ask yourself the hard questions about it. This is the truth of what you advocate for and if you are so for it why can't you take the time to look at it candidly you should be able to without any problems at all if what you stand for is right. So how is the taking of another human life justifiable? And why should this be a choice anyone is allowed to make for another person's life? What if that pre-born baby were you, or someone you loved...would it make a difference to you then? I say this not out of spite or hatred but out of love. Please open your eyes to the truth. ALL women, children, and men deserve better than this! No human being deserves to be ripped apart or delivered into a toilet ever for ANY reason.
